Before Installation:
- Check that the base unit carcasses are firmly fixed and level.
- Ensure that any internal aperture has rounded corners and smooth to the touch.
- Apply silicone, water resistant paint or varnish to all exposed edges of the substrate.
- Consider the condition of walls, and whether the back edge of the tops requires scribing.
- Check the quality of the worktops prior to cutting, any defects should be reported immediately.
During Installation:
- Check site dimensions and allow approximately 1mm per metre expansion / contraction allowance.
- Check all end caps to ensure that square finished ends do not require profiling. This can be done by machining a 6mm radius using a round over cutter with nylon roller guide set into a portable hand router or even sanded using 120/240 paper in the orbital sander.
- Machine mitre joints using conventional worktop mitre jig. Machine a 6 – 6.5mm groove, directly beneath the solid surface sheet to each side of the joint to take the Acrylic loose tongue. Fig. 1.
- Once cut to size ensure that all joints are perfect for fit and all overhang dimensions are accurate.
- Clean all joints with Alcohol before applying adhesive.
- Apply acrylic adhesive to one of the grooves and firmly push the loose tongue home (this should then sit proud by 5mm). Apply another bead into the adjoining groove and gently bring the tops to within 3mm of one another. Apply a continuous bead down the entire length of the joint and down the front edge. Fig 2.
Draw the tops together with panel butting connectors and allow excess adhesive to form over the joint. Fig 3. Do not attempt to remove any adhesive whilst still wet.
- Leave adhesive forr 30-45 minutes depending upon ambient conditions.
- Remove most of the excess with a block plane and finish with a random orbital sander. Start by using 120 grit paper until all trace of adhesive around the joint has disappeared, then proceed to sand the entire worktop surface using the same grade paper and work in both North – South and East – Weat directions. It is vital that the sander is kept flat at all times.
- After sanding using 120 grit, wash down with water and repeat using 240 grit, repeat the process again for 320, then finish using Red / Grey Scotchbrite. Clean the surfaces using the Eagle Spray.
- In order to apply an edging strip use a router to machine away approximately 8mm of the MDF. Clean the edge with alcohol and apply a bead of adhesive in the two positions shown in Fig 4. Clamp using “A” frame nip clamps. Machine or sand off excess material.
